Home Decore & More

Happy Holidays!

Anyone who knows me, understands that I am a holiday lover. There is not a single major holiday that I don’t decorate our home for. Yes, it takes time, yes it’s a bit of work but it is so worth it.  I enjoy bring the seasons into our home and especially our covered front porch. My style …..maybe I’d call it ‘whatever I like’. There is no specific style or reason. Honestly, I use much of the same things each year but change the look a little each time or add a new item occasionally. If it brings you joy, use it.

Here is my very simple iron candleholder that needed a holiday touch.

I knew that I wanted greens with a touch of red and/or neutrals but no real plan how to achieve it. So I headed to Target, Michaels and Hobby Lobby. I found the little brush trees at Target for a dollar, found a $5 wreath in their dollar bins up front that had greens and berries and pine cones. I found some floral picks at HL that were greenery but a different color and texture so I grabbed two. That should do it. Once home, I got out the wire cutters and started snipping away pieces from the wreath to give me 4”-6” pieces  of greens and berries. Once I had them cut, I just assembled it but setting things in place as they appealed to me. I’m so glad I chose the cream brush trees instead of green or burgundy because they really stand out yet carry on the colors of the candles so it’s cohesive. Cost me less than $10 and I will reuse it next year. Win-win!

I also pulled out my other items to decorate inside the house. I pulled out an old Christmas plate I had not used in years and it was perfect for three pillars with a few Berry sprigs. I love simple.

The following photos reflect my other holiday decorations. Comments by each photo. My decorating philosophy; If you love it, use it and use it over and over. Many of these items I have used for several decades so there are lots of memories attached. That’s what I love!

This tall glass jar has been with me for years. At Christmas I fill it with ornaments. Don’t you love the cute little mice?

This room just feels so warm and cozy at Christmas.

I found this gingerbread house and trees on Zulily years ago. The windows even light up! I love love love anything gingerbread.

Those Santa’s and moose are wood, not resin, and were hand carved by a co-workers husband. They are 30 something years old. Just gorgeous work.

I did not make these stockings but ordered off Zulily when each grand was born. Luckily, they carried them each year!

My boys did have hand painted stockings that I made them when they were little. I hand painted all the wood pieces and glued them on. I’m sure they wished I would have made larger stockings!

My foyer has my snowman collection and, yes, our Elf snuck in there to play.

Let’s head outside and see what’s there. This door hanger came from Etsy and it pretty much says it all. We are big Christmas Vacation fans so I HAD to have it. It’s really fun to see the delivery guys chuckle once they read it.

The porch. My happy place. I ordered the snowflake throw and reindeer pillow off Zulily. I ordered the Buffalo check pillows from Zulily also. Every season this porch gets a new seasonal touch. My glider looks vintage but it’s from Grandin Road. It’s 6 yrs old and needs repainted. I covered it one winter but I it just kept dust off, not moisture. The moisture crept in from the air and caused some rust.

We don’t put a huge amount of lights up anymore but I like them on the porch. I have single led candles burning in every window, which is really pretty at night.

I buy my greens for the pots on the porch at Lowe’s or Walmart and just set the decorated pots in my black pots. At the end of the season I pull off the floral pieces I can repurpose and the pot and toss the rest. The rest Lanterns…..Walmart.

I use lots of ornaments as fillers. They are inexpensive and can switch out colors easily. The pointsettas are so old that they have faded but I kind of like that look in my rusted planters. I really like the addition of the red and white rug I got last year. Amazon is the source.

Aren’t those elf legs cute. I cannot even recall where I got them but they are a favorite.

Fall and Halloween

It’s hard to say which holiday I like decorating for more…..Christmas or fall and Halloween. It’s a toss up!
One of my favorite creations for Halloween are these pumpkin stacks I made many years ago. They are just craft pumpkins that I painted and run a dowel through. That’s how they are anchored in the pot. I just shove it in the existing soil. They are sturdy devils. I have added a metal initial and periodically fresh with new bows. I found fall table wreaths work great as fillers underneath and smaller ones on top and between the pumpkins.
